The Little Free Justice Library movement was established in Yarmouth, Maine in the spring of 2020. Instructions to access a wish-list at Frugal Bookstore in Roxbury, Massachusetts were included as well as a list of thinking and talking prompts (downloadable below).
Many of the books on our original list are now on the growing list of banned books. This tells us that these books are recognized as sources of power. Even more powerful than a book - are the conversations we have around them. Picture books due to their images, and often their words, allow for many ways into a conversation.
And any books can be used to talk about justice, however picture books that center stories and histories of people of the global majority and historically and currently marginalized and oppressed peoples offer spaces for especially rich conversations. As these books and the truths they tell are increasingly censored in schools - we in the Little Free Justice Library movement believe that it is critical to intentionally move these conversations into community spaces.
We invite you to download the provided list of prompts, or create your own. Put these prompts in spaces where books are offered. Share out on social media your thoughts on the books you read.
Let's talk justice—together and grow this movement.
Imagine the actions our conversations will spark!
